Congratulations to our 2019 Toronto Region Builder Award Recipient: Dr. Geoffrey Hinton!
Dr. Geoffrey Hinton is an English-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist noted for his work on artificial neural networks. Commonly referred to as the “Godfather of Deep Learning,” Dr. Hinton heads Canada’s leading research hub focused on deep learning and machine learning and a centrepiece in Toronto’s booming AI ecosystem. Dr. Hinton was also a top contributor to the recent ‘capsule networks’ breakthrough technology.
I’m honoured to be selected as this year’s Toronto Region Builder and to have the opportunity to highlight the region’s incredible global AI capabilities. My goal is to ensure Vector Institute serves as a beacon for the world’s most talented, elite computer scientists and AI specialists. This award signals we are on the right track and Canadian business, academia and all levels of government recognize the vast potential of Toronto in shaping the future of this important technology.
Thanks to Geoffrey’s visionary leadership, the Toronto region’s AI advantage positioned us decades ahead of our major global competitors. The Board is proud global researchers like Geoffrey are not only calling Toronto home, but investing their considerable expertise, talent, and conviction in building our region as a global tech hub.
We are honouring a leader who is making Toronto synonymous with advanced thinking and innovation in the eyes of the world. Toronto is one of the great global cities preparing for the future. Through his dedicated commitment to innovation, research and advocacy, Geoffrey is ensuring that we have the talent, resources and knowledge to excel in a changing world.
For the past six years, the Toronto Region Builder Award has recognized individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making the Toronto region a better place to live, work and learn, through volunteerism, exemplary leadership or financial investment. This may include lifelong service, inspiring charitable work, community building or other noteworthy achievements.
